One reason of not having a child is the huge amount of responsibility that regularly goes along with a child. If one has a child, the impossibility of being spontaneous throws a big dark shadow across one's life. Going along with that is the problem of changing habits like going out with friends, going to the movies or theater, or simply party at home with others. Also the fact that the own behaviour sets examples to the child is terrifying since one has got to quit habits one has gotten used to. Furthermore one becomes mentally attached to the child, so that it becomes very hard to leave the child alone with friends, babysitters, or grandparents.

Another problem turns up as soon as one of the partners or single parents have to spend more time with the child because of pregnancy, the time beyond pregnancy, or the first years of baby's life when one has to cut shorter on the job. Most of the time, the mothers will have to face the problem that they will not be able to start or finish a professional career. Because of the lack of income the families will have less money to keep up their personal standard of living. This means that they cannot spend their vacations as they used to, the apartment has to have an extra room and needs to be cheaper than before. Also the car has to be larger but less expensive. Furthermore one has got to find a place in a nursery school which can also be very stressful an expensive. Since especially young children grow very fast, the parents often have to purchase new clothes which are also very expensive. This enhances the financial burden of families. Another expensive aspect is the health care for the child which, especially during the first years, is outstanding.

This leads right on the the next argument which is the financial burden a child represents. It is not only the problem of the mental attachment or giving up personal freedom; it is also the fact that a child is a burden over a period of time which often lasts longer than 18 years. During this period of time a child costs more than €250 000 . If it decides on higher education like university, it will be even more money to be spent on the child. Especially during the time of puberty a child demands more than it actually gives in return.
